This would also be a great art project to do with the book Charlotte’s Web. Kids could pick different words that go along with the book, or come up with their own unique word for the spider web.

Supplies
- Watercolor paper
- Watercolor paint
- White oil pastels
- Paintbrushes
- Wooden board and painter’s tape (optional)
- Paint palette and water dish
- Pencil and eraser
Instructions for your Halloween art
1. First you want to get your paper ready. I like to tape down my paper to a wooden board with painters tape.
This helps the paper from sliding around and keeps it from wrinkling. If you do not have a wooden board, you can skip this step.
2. Have kids choose a word that they want to include in their spider web. A shorter word works best so there is enough room to print.
Some kids might want to draw out the word and spider web lightly in pencil first. If you draw it out in pencil, make sure that the pencil lines are very light so they don’t show through the oil pastel. You can even try erasing the lines a bit to make them lighter.
Other kids might be ok drawing everything out with oil pastel on the first try.
Draw or trace your design using white oil pastel. Print out the word first, and then draw in the spider web around the word.
Remind kids to press hard and use thick lines to get the best results with the resist technique.
3. Choose 3 – 4 watercolors for your design. I used liquid watercolors for this project, but a regular watercolor set will also work.
Make sure to test out your colors first on scrap paper, watercolors will always dry a bit lighter.
Paint your paper with clean water first. You want the paper to be wet but not soaking.
4. Start at the top of your paper and using one color at a time paint your spider web. Let the colors mix together on the wet paper.
Kids love to watch their design appear as they paint!
As the paint dries, the colors will blend together and soften, creating a beautiful effect.
This is called a wet on wet technique. It’s a super easy watercolor technique for kids and always looks great!
This spider web art project is an easy and fun Halloween painting idea that kids will love to make!
