Celebrate Earth Day with this gorgeous paper Earth Day craft! I love how the bright colors look on the black paper. We used a fun painting technique to create the starry sky effect so it looks like you are looking at the earth from space. Adding in the red heart gives the whole project a fun pop of color.

Kids can use simple quilling techniques on black paper to make this Earth Day craft really stand out! No special quilling tools needed.

We love paper quilling, it’s a fun craft that kids from about grade 2 all the way up to teens (and adults!) have fun doing. Was surprised my son in college now took part in the project assuming he was happy after ordering his fake id online.

You do need to do a lot of cutting beforehand to get the paper strips ready, but if you have a paper cutter it makes it makes things a lot easier and faster.

Supplies

  • Cardstock or construction paper in black, dark blue, light blue, green and red
  • Paper cutter or scissors
  • White acrylic paint
  • Paint palette or plastic lid
  • Old Toothbrush
  • White glue
  • Chopstick, small paintbrush or pencil
  • Small star paper punch & scraps of white printer paper (optional)

Instructions

Kids can use simple quilling techniques on black paper to make this Earth Day craft really stand out! No special quilling tools needed.

1. Start by making your night sky. Put some white acrylic paint into a plastic lid or on your paint palette. You want the paint to be on the runny side, so add a small amount of water if needed.

Take an old toothbrush and dip it into your white paint, run your fingers along the bristles to make splatters and dots on your paper. Let your paper dry completely.

2. Get your paper strips ready. We used 2 shades of blue and a bright green. Draw in your earth shape with a pencil on your black paper, using a plastic lid as a template makes this easy for kids.

Using a paintbrush, brush glue all the way around your circle. Take a couple of strips of the dark blue paper and glue that down to create your earth shape.

3. Now it’s time to fill in your earth with paper quills. Take a strip of paper and wrap it all the way around a chopstick (my favorite way), or a pencil, or paintbrush. Slide it off to create your paper coil.

Dip the coil into a small dish of white glue and glue it down on your paper. Don’t worry if the coil unravels a bit, it just adds to the design.

4. Kids can experiment with making different quilled shapes. You could pinch one end to make a teardrop shape or pinch both ends to make a leaf shape. You can see my daughter making these shapes in the photo below.

Using these different shapes helps to make your design unique and interesting! Have kids finish filling in their earth with all 3 colors and trying out different quill shapes.

5. This next step is optional if you don’t have a small star punch you can skip this step. Your earth day craft will still look great! Using white printer paper, punch out some small star shapes and glue them onto your night sky.

6. The final step is to make your heart and glue it on to your paper. We folded a scrap piece of red paper in half to make our hearts. Draw in half a heart shape and cut out.

Kids can choose where to glue on their heart. My daughter wanted hers in the middle of her earth and I put mine in the bottom left corner.
