Supplies
- Watercolor paper or white cardstock
- Watercolor paint (you can use a watercolor set or liquid watercolors for this project)
- Paintbrush
- Oil pastels
- Paint palette and water dish
- Scissors and a pencil
- Paper straws
Instructions for your rainy day art
1. First, print out the umbrella template. I used watercolor paper for this project, but you can also use cardstock. If you use cardstock, the watercolor paint will look and behave slightly different than on the watercolor paper.
For watercolor paper, print out the template, cut it out and trace it onto your watercolor paper. If you are using cardstock, print out your template onto white cardstock.

2. Use oil pastels to draw a colorful design on the umbrella. Make sure to outline the umbrella and color in the handle with oil pastels.
Use thicker lines when you draw with oil pastels to get the best results with the resist technique.

3. Have kids choose a color to paint in the umbrella with watercolor paint. As you paint over the umbrella, the oil pastel will resist the paint and show through. Let the paint dry completely before moving on. Ā Ā

4. Choose one or two colors of blue watercolor for the rain. If you are using a watercolor set, mix up your colors in a palette with some water. You will need a fair amount of paint for this part.

Have you paper straw ready. I found it easier for kids if the straw is cut in half. Turn your paper upside down to make it easier for the blow painting.
Start by loading your paintbrush up with paint and dabbing on puddles of paint at the top of your paper. Use the straw to blow the puddles down your paper to make it look like it’s raining.

6. Continue to dab on the paint and use the straw to blow the paint down the paper. Use your paintbrush to paint around the top of the umbrella and then the straw to blow the paint down.
The oil pastel will act as a barrier and the paint should go around the umbrella but some drips might get on the umbrella here and there. When you are done, let your paper dry flat.

This watercolor rainy day painting makes a great spring art idea that kids will love to make!

Awesome Watercolor Rainy Day Painting for Kids to Make

Kids will use blow painting with straws and oil pastels to make this awesome watercolor rainy day painting! A fun spring art project.
Materials
- Watercolor paper or white cardstock
- Watercolor paint (you can use a watercolor set or liquid watercolors for this project)
- Oil pastels
- Paper straws cut in half
Tools
- Paintbrush
- Paint palette and water dish
- Scissors and a pencil
Instructions
- Print out your umbrella template. If you are using watercolor paper, print it, cut it out and trace it onto your paper.
If you are using cardstock, simply print it out onto white cardstock. - Use oil pastels to outline the umbrella and draw on a colorful design.
- Paint the inside of the umbrella with watercolor paint. Let it dry completely before moving on.
- For the rain, you will need one or two shades of blue. I used two different blues, but they ended up mixing together. I think one color of blue works just as well. Mix up your paint in a palette and cut your paper straws in half.
- Turn your paper upside down and with a paintbrush start to dab on the blue paint at the top of your paper. Use a straw to blow the paint in a downward motion to create the rain.
Continue to dab on paint, and then blow it down your paper with a straw. Paint around the umbrella and blow the paint down. - When you are finished with your blow painting, let your paper dry flat.
