- Acrylic paint in light purple, dark purple, and green (or any colors kids choose for the flowers)
- White glue or gluestick
- String or ribbon
- Scissors

Instructions for your flower painting
1. First, print out the watering can template. You can either print it out onto white cardstock and use that as a template or print it out directly onto colored cardstock.
Cut out the pieces of the template and tie string or a ribbon around the top part of the watering can. Use a dab of glue to secure it in place.
2. Glue this down to a piece of white cardstock, making sure that it’s as close to the bottom as possible. This will allow for more room to paint your flowers. Next, glue on the handle and spout, tucking them under the main part of the watering can just slightly.
3. Use a small round brush and green acrylic paint to paint the stems coming out of the watering can. Try varying the length of the stems to add some interest.
Kids can also paint in thick and thin lines for the stems if they choose and even have some of the stems leaning over the edge of the watering can.
4. While the flower stems are drying, make your straw brush. Cut tiny slits in one end of the straw about 1/2 an inch up. Fan out the cut ends of the straw.
5. Start with light purple paint (or any color that kids choose), dip your straw in the paint, and press it down on the paper making a flower print. Keep making flower prints, alternating on each side of the stems.
When kids are finished making flower prints with their first color, let the paint dry before moving on.
6. Get the dark purple color ready (or any color that kids choose) and start to print flowers on top of the lighter color to make a layered look. You want to be careful not to cover up all the light purple flowers as you are printing.
When kids are happy with how their flowers look, let the painting dry on a flat surface.
This straw flower painting for kids is such a fun and unique art project! It would make a great Mother’s Day card idea or spring or summer painting.
