Instructions to make your snowflake craft
1. Each snowflake ornament uses 4 popsicle sticks. Pick out your paint colors and paint four popsicle sticks, front and back. Let them dry completely before moving on.
We used a turquoise blue, an icy blue and a pale lavender color for our snowflakes.
2. Glue your popsicle sticks together to make a snowflake. I used a glue gun for this part, but strong white glue would also work. You would just have to let the glue dry really well before starting the next step.
3. The next step is to get your paper quilling supplies ready. We used silver cardstock for our paper quills.
Cut your paper strips to 1/4 of an inch thick. Our paper was 8.5 inches x 11 inches and after I cut the strips I cut each strip in half to 5.5 inches. Using a paper cutter makes this step much easier and faster!
Put white glue in a small plastic lid or dish and get a bamboo skewer.
4. Take a paper strip and wrap it around the bamboo skewer. Carefully slide it off the skewer and using a small brush (use an older brush you don’t mind getting glue on) glue the end of the paper quill closed.
The quills will probably unravel a bit and that’s ok! This will give you a basic circle shape. Try making a couple of different shapes by pinching one end of the circle for a tear-drop shape or try pinching both ends like in the photo above.
5. Dip your paper quill into the small dish of white glue (you want the bottom of the quill completely covered in glue) and place it on your popsicle stick snowflake. You might need to hold it in place for a few seconds to make sure it stays glued down.
Continue in this way, making your paper quills and gluing them down. Kids can choose to follow a pattern with the different shapes of quills or do random shapes.
You can try using gold paper for the quills or a mix of gold and silver paper would look neat! Even a white pearly color would look beautiful. The quills on top of the painted popsicle sticks look really cool and unique!
6. Cut a length of ribbon or string, tie a knot at the end and glue it to the back of your ornament.
I love how these popsicle stick snowflakes turned out! They make such a great ornament craft for older kids and tweens. It does require a bit of patience to make and glue all of the quills down, but the results are stunning.
It’s a great Christmas craft activity to make while watching Christmas movies and drinking hot chocolate!
