You won’t believe how easy it is to transform mini terra cotta pots into these absolutely adorable gingerbread house ornaments! They were so fun to make, the clay pots act as a mini canvas to create a colorful gingerbread house scene that kids can customize any way they like.

This is a great craft for older kids and tweens, my 8-year-old daughter made an ornament all by herself and it turned out great!

She practiced a bit with the paint pens first on some paper before using them on the clay pots. We used extra-fine point paint pens, which helped with drawing the details.

Create your own gingerbread house ornaments

Supplies

• Paint pens – I ordered these pens for this project and they are seriously amazing! I can’t believe I waited so long to get good quality paint pens.
• Mini terra cotta pots
• Ribbon
• Small craft bells
• White acrylic paint
• Paintbrushes

Instructions for your gingerbread house craft

1. Get your supplies ready. There are a few different sizes of mini terra cotta pots, we used the smallest size that our craft store had which are about 2 1/4 inches high.

We used these same pots to make our painted fairy houses, which kids will also love to make!

I ordered some new paint pens for this project, our old paint pens were not great, the tips were frayed and the colors weren’t as bright as I would have liked.

The extra-fine tip paint pens that I ordered are amazing! They seriously made all the difference in this project, bright colors and the tips are plastic, so no fraying.

2. First, outline the snow drips on your pot with a white paint pen. Fill in your design, leaving the very top of the pot blank. To save on ink you will paint the top white later.

3. Next, add the door and a window. Kids can choose the color and design of their door and window. I did my doors green and my daughter wanted hers a bright blue.

You can add some decorations around the door and window, don’t forget to add a door handle.

4. Now the fun part of adding candy decorations! Kids can add candy canes, lollipops, gumdrops, let them have fun and get creative. I love how each little gingerbread house turns out so unique.

5. Once kids have finished creating their design, they can paint the top and bottom of their gingerbread houses white.

Using acrylic paint and a small paintbrush, paint the top first and let it dry before painting around the bottom of the pot.

6. These gingerbread houses look so sweet just on their own, they would look great on a mantle as part of a Christmas scene. But you can also turn them into ornaments.

Take some ribbon and double knot and thread the other end through the top of your pot like in the picture above. Add on a mini bell and tie a knot at the other end to finish it off.

I just love how these turned out, this was such a fun Christmas craft that both my daughter and I could enjoy making together. I can’t wait to hang these ornaments on our tree this year.
