Spin painting is one of our favorite painting activities! It’s easy enough for preschool-aged children and older kids also love this activity. Take a look at this heart spin painting and galaxy spin painting for more fun ideas!
For this project, I created printable star templates to make this art project even easier. These templates are available in my shop as part of my New Year’s art project bundle that includes two different art activities. You can also make your own star templates if you like.

- Black cardstock
- White cardstock
- Gold or silver ribbon
- Gold and silver acrylic paint
- Salad spinner ** Use an old salad spinner that will not be used for food
- Gold or silver marker
- Scissors

Instructions to make your New Year’s Eve banner
1. Start by making your spin art stars. Print out your star templates, or draw your own stars.
If kids are going to draw their own stars, make sure they are big enough to fit in your salad spinner. If they are too small, they will stick to the sides when you spin.

2. Cut out the template and trace the bigger star onto black cardstock, you will need two stars for your banner. We made a few more because spin painting is so fun!
3. Put a star in the bottom of an old salad spinner, and drizzle gold and silver paint onto the star. You don’t want to cover the whole star with paint, leave lots of black showing.

4. Put the lid on the salad spinner and spin. To make it easier for kids to spin, have an adult hold the salad spinner. Open the lid to reveal your unique pattern. It’s always fun for kids to see the design that they made!
Carefully, take the star out and set it aside to dry. Finish spinning the rest of your stars.

You can use your extra stars for table decor or just as a fun art project! Try using the smaller star template to cut out the middle of one of your stars for a cool effect.
5. Next, you want to make your Happy New Year sign. Cut out a rectangle out of white cardstock. Write “Happy New Year” with a gold or silver marker. I cut ours to approximately 7 1/4 inches x 1 1/2 inches.

6. Trace the smaller star onto gold or silver cardstock and cut it out.
7. Cut a length of ribbon for your banner and tie a loop at the top for hanging up.

8. Before you start to glue anything down, place all of the items onto the ribbon to see the placement of everything.
Kids can add more stars or change the layout if they like to make their banner unique. You can even add the date to your craft.

Glue the back of one star and press it onto the ribbon. The glue will leak through the ribbon so make sure you have scrap paper or newspaper down.
Continue gluing all of your banner items to the ribbon. Once everything is glued down, turn your banner over to dry. Make sure to let the glue dry completely before hanging it up.

I love how this star spin painting art project turned out! The banner makes a great New Year’s Eve decor idea and the spin painted stars are so pretty and look great all on their own.
This sparkly gold garland with paper straws would also make a great New Year’s decoration!
