Supplies
- Black drawing paper, chalk pastel paper, scrapbook paper or construction paper
- Chalk pastels
- Blending stick or q-tips (optional)
- Paper towels
- Workable fixative (optional)
Instructions to make your space art
1. First, start by getting your paper ready. We used black drawing paper but you can also use black pastel paper, scrapbook paper or even black construction paper.
I cut our paper to 6 x 6 inches, I find that sometimes working on a smaller scale with chalk pastels makes it a bit easier for kids.
2. Have kids decide on a shape for their galaxy, we used a simple spiral shape for this tutorial. Looking at real galaxies for this project helped to inspire the colors and shapes of our galaxy art!
Take some time to really look at different galaxy photos, and have kids notice the subtle difference in colors and shapes of all the amazing space photos out there!
3. Use a pencil to lightly draw in your galaxy spiral.
4. Pick out your chalk pastel colors. We use white, blue, pink, purple and an orange-yellow color.
Color in the center of your spiral with white pastel.
5. Follow your spiral drawing and draw thick lines with your blue pastel. Do the same with pink and purple chalk pastel, like in the photos above.
Remind kids to leave lots of space around the edges of the paper to add in the stars at the end.

6. Blend these colors together with your fingers, a blending tool or a q-tip. Blend in the direction of the spiral to keep the spiral shape. Remind kids not just take their fingers and smudge the colors all over the page.
7. Add in some white and orange chalk pastel around the spiral, do not blend these colors. Adding colors on top that don’t require blending adds interest and texture to your art!
8. Finally, take white chalk pastel and dot around the paper, adding in your stars.
You can choose to spray a workable fixative on your pastel drawing to prevent smudging, but it’s not necessary. This step should be done by an adult in an outside area.
These little galaxy chalk pastel drawings are so fun for kids to make! I love the bright colors and the swirly shapes that we used. They would make a wonderful project idea for kids and tweens at home or in the classroom!
Tips for working with chalk pastels
Chalk pastels can be messy (but so fun!). There are a few things you can do to keep some of the mess contained:
- Put newspaper down on desks or tables
- Put your project on a tray or a shallow cardboard box which will keep the most of the mess inside the tray
- You can try doing your project outside
- Have lots of paper towels handy to wipe off hands and work surfaces
- Once you are done with your project, take it outside to gently blow or shake off the excess dust
- If you are using chalk pastels in the classroom and the kids are ready to take their artwork home, simply place the art between some newspaper to keep it from smudging and for easy transport.
