These watermelon painted rocks are just adorable! We had a lot of fun making them! They are easy enough for kids to do on their own and make a great summer craft project for at home, for summer camp or even a summer birthday party.
These rocks would be perfect for hiding around your town for other people to discover, you could put them in your garden to enjoy, or simply find a spot to display them inside.

Instructions to paint your watermelon rocks
1. First, you need to collect and prepare your rocks. You can either collect your rocks from outside or buy them from a landscaping supply store or a craft store.
It’s a good idea to wash your rocks first with soap and water and let them dry thoroughly. We tried to find rocks that were shaped like watermelon slices.
2. Once your rocks are dry, you can paint on the base coat. To get the perfect watermelon shade, I mixed together red and pink acrylic paint colors. If you already have a shade of paint that will work, you can just use that.
Depending on your rock color and the type of paint you use, you might need to paint more than one coat. Our rocks needed two coats of paint. Make sure to let each layer dry first before moving on.

3. After your color has been painted on and is dry, it’s time to add on the two different shades of greens with paint pens. We used fine tip paint pens because that’s all we had, but I think a medium point would work much better for this.
Start with the darker shade of green and draw a line across to give yourself a guide. Fill in the bottom part of your rock with your green paint pen.
Next, add a thinner line of light green next to your darker green color.
4. Now it’s time to add on the face! Using white and black fine tip paint pens, draw on the eyes and add a mouth like in the example above.
You may find you need to do two coats of the white for the eyes first before adding in the black. Make sure to let the white dry or you will get smudging when you add in the black.
5. Draw in the watermelon seeds with a fine tip black paint pen.
6. The final step is to seal your rock with either Mod Podge or a spray sealer. I like to use Mod Podge because it’s easy for kids to do on their own and you don’t need to worry about using any toxic sprays.
If you are going to be placing these rocks outside, you will need to use a weatherproof Mod Podge.
