Tips for working with chalk pastels

Chalk pastels can be messy (but so fun!). There are a few things you can do to help keep some of the mess contained:

• Put newspaper down on desks or tables
• Put your project on a tray or a shallow cardboard box which will keep most of the mess inside the tray 
• You can try doing your project outside 
• Have lots of paper towels handy 
• Once you are done with your project (or even halfway through if it gets really dusty), take it outside to gently blow or shake off the excess dust
• If you are using chalk pastels in the classroom and the kids are ready to take their artwork home, simply place the art between some newspaper to keep it from smudging and for easy transport.

Create your own chalk pastel fireworks art

Supplies

• We used black drawing paper but you could also use black pastel paper, scrapbook paper or construction paper.
• Chalk pastels
• Pencil
• Paper towels

Instructions to make your fireworks art

1. Draw in some fireworks lines in a burst pattern with a pencil on your black paper. Drawing a bigger firework in the center and a few small ones around it is a nice layout, but kids can choose to draw them however they like.

When you are drawing your fireworks, you don’t need to draw in every single line, just a few lines for each firework will help to make things easier when adding in the chalk pastel colors.

We used black drawing paper for this project, but you could also use black pastel paper, scrapbook or even black construction paper. The chalk pastels will look slightly different on each type of paper, but will still look great!

2. Choose two to three pastel colors for each firework drawing. White pastel will be added on top of that. So each firework will have three to four total colors.

I find this a good amount for the colors to be layered on top of each other for a nice effect. Too many colors can get messy and not look as bright and crisp.

Start with one color and holding the pastel like a pencil, trace over your fireworks line drawing. Draw more fireworks lines with another color and then add in your third color if you are using it.

3.  Finish off your firework by drawing in a few lines of white pastel on top, following the firework burst pattern. You only need to draw in a few lines of white to add to the brightness of your firework.

4. Next, move on to the smaller fireworks. We used two similar shades for our smaller fireworks and added white on top. We also added white pastel to the ends of some of the fireworks.   

5. Kids can try experimenting with their own firework designs. There are lots of different ways kids can express their creativity and design their own type of fireworks!

Once kids start looking at fireworks photos and drawing their own designs, they will want to make more than one art project!

6. For the final touch to your art project, add in some small white dots in a few places on your paper. This will add to the overall effect of the fireworks.
